Dr. Sanath Kumar Hirekudel is a senior scientist (Microbiology) in the Post-Harvest Department of Central Institute of Fisheries Education (ICAR-CIFE), Mumbai, India. His research is on seafood-borne pathogens, their virulence mechanisms, physiology & genetics of pathogen persistence in food, antimicrobial resistance, toxins, membrane transporters of sugar and efflux pumps. He has wide post-doctoral research experience in India and overseas laboratories in Japan, China, Thailand, Germany and USA. His recent works include whole genome sequencing and analysis of Vibrio cholerae, efflux-mediated antibiotic resistance mechanisms in pathogenic bacteria and PTS-mediated mannitol transport.

He has worked on the distribution of viruses of cultured shrimp in coastal waters and has recently reported on the involvement of Vibrio parahemolyticus in persistent mortalities of WSSV infected Penaeus vannamei cultured in low saline waters in India. He has published 54 research papers in peer reviewed international journals and 6 book chapters.
